Mobile Data Not Working? Here's What to Check

When mobile data stops working — no 4G, no 5G, or pages just won't load — the fix is usually in your phone settings rather than a problem with the network. Here's where to look.

Mobile data problems range from simple settings switches to carrier configuration issues. Most can be resolved without calling your carrier.

Basic Checks First

  • Airplane mode off. Swipe down to check your notification shade or Control Centre — if Airplane mode is on, it disables all cellular and Wi-Fi radios.
  • Mobile data is enabled. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data (US: Cellular) — make sure the toggle is on. On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → Mobile data.
  • Data hasn't run out. If you're on a limited data plan, check your carrier's app or website to make sure you haven't used your monthly allowance.
  • Wi-Fi Assist / Adaptive Wi-Fi isn't hiding the problem. If your phone is connected to a weak Wi-Fi network, it may appear to be using data while actually being throttled by a poor Wi-Fi signal. Try toggling Wi-Fi off completely to test mobile data on its own.

Toggle Airplane Mode On, Then Off

This forces the phone to re-register with the nearest cell tower. Turn Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then turn it off. Wait up to a minute for the data connection to re-establish.

Restart the Phone

A full restart re-initialises the cellular radio. Power off completely, wait 10 seconds, and power back on.

Check APN Settings

The Access Point Name (APN) is a setting that tells your phone how to connect to your carrier's data network. If this is wrong or missing, data won't work even if you have signal.

  • iPhone: Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Mobile Data Network. If this menu doesn't exist, your carrier manages it automatically.
  • Android: Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → Access point names (Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names).

Contact your carrier's support or visit their website to get the correct APN details for your plan.

Reset Network Settings

This clears all network configurations and starts fresh. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords.

  • iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
  • Android (Samsung): Settings → General Management → Reset → Reset network settings
  • Pixel: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth

Try Your SIM in Another Phone

If data works in another phone with your SIM, the problem is with your phone's settings or hardware. If data doesn't work in another phone either, the problem is the SIM or your account with the carrier — call them.

If nothing here works, ask us — unusual APN configurations and carrier-locked phones sometimes need a more specific approach.

Frequently asked questions

I have full signal bars but mobile data still doesn't work. How?

Signal bars show your voice/call signal strength, not data connectivity. It's common to have strong signal (bars) but broken data. The most likely causes are a misconfigured APN setting, an account issue with your carrier (unpaid bill, plan change), or a software glitch in the phone's network stack. Go through the APN check and network settings reset described above, and verify with your carrier that data is active on your account.

My data was working fine and then just stopped — I didn't change anything. What happened?

Carriers occasionally push network configuration updates that can disrupt existing settings. Your carrier may also have had an outage in your area. Toggle airplane mode, restart the phone, and check your carrier's status page or social media accounts for outage reports. If the issue persists, a network settings reset usually resolves configuration changes that arrived silently.
