Printer Not Printing Black Even Though the Ink Is Full

If your printer skips the black ink while all other colors print fine, a clogged printhead or a software setting is usually the culprit. This guide walks you through every fix.

It's oddly common: your printer produces color just fine, but black text comes out invisible or very faint, even though the black cartridge shows ink remaining. Here's what to do.

Why This Happens

Black ink nozzles clog faster than color nozzles because black pigment ink is thicker. If the printer sits idle for a few weeks, the black nozzles can dry out while the color ones stay usable. A cartridge can also have a small air bubble blocking the nozzle plate, or the cartridge contacts can be dirty.

Step 1: Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

This is the first thing to try. On HP printers, open HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant, go to Printer Maintenance and select Clean Printheads. On Epson, open Epson Printer Utility and click Head Cleaning. On Canon, open the Canon IJ Utility and choose Cleaning. After the cycle finishes, print the nozzle check pattern to see if black is restored.

Step 2: Check the Nozzle Test Pattern

Every inkjet printer can print a diagnostic nozzle check pattern — usually found in the printer's maintenance or tools menu, either on the device itself or in the printer software. If the black row is missing or has gaps, the nozzle is clogged. If the black row prints fine there but not in your documents, skip to Step 4.

Step 3: Clean the Cartridge Contacts Manually

Power off the printer and remove the black cartridge. Dampen a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with plain water (not alcohol) and gently wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the carriage. Let everything dry for five minutes before reinserting.

Step 4: Check Document Color Settings

Open your document, go to File > Print, click Printer Properties or Preferences, and make sure the color mode is not set to Color Only or that grayscale is not set to use color inks instead of black. Some apps default to composite black (mixing color inks to make black) rather than using the black cartridge.

Step 5: Replace the Black Cartridge

If the nozzle pattern shows the black is consistently missing even after two cleaning cycles, the cartridge has likely failed. Replace it with a genuine manufacturer cartridge and test again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I force the printer to use color inks to print black text while I wait for a new black cartridge?

Yes. In your printer's preferences (under File > Print > Printer Properties), look for a color management or ink settings option. Choose 'Color' or 'Composite Black' to mix color inks as a temporary workaround. Be aware this uses more color ink and the result may look slightly brown or gray.

My black ink cartridge is brand new and still not printing. What's wrong?

New cartridges occasionally arrive with a manufacturing defect or a partially blocked nozzle. First, make sure all protective tape has been removed. Then run one cleaning cycle. If black still doesn't print, the cartridge may be defective — return it to the retailer for a replacement.
