Bluetooth on Windows works well when everything is set up correctly, but pairing issues and audio failures are common. Here is a structured approach.
Check Bluetooth Is On and the Headphones Are Discoverable
In Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm the Bluetooth toggle is turned on. Put your headphones into pairing mode — consult the headphone manual, but this usually involves holding the power button for a few seconds until a light flashes rapidly. Headphones must be in pairing mode for a new connection to work.
Remove the Existing Pairing and Start Fresh
If the headphones appear in your device list but fail to connect, removing and re-pairing often solves it.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Click the three dots next to the headphone name and choose Remove device.
- Also remove the pairing on the headphones themselves (hold the pairing button for several seconds, or consult the manual for the factory-reset procedure).
- Re-add the device by clicking Add device and following the prompts.
Set the Headphones as the Default Audio Device
After connecting, right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar, choose Sound settings, and under Output select your headphones. Windows sometimes keeps audio on the previous output device even after Bluetooth connects.
Check for the Hands-Free Profile Issue
Bluetooth headphones often appear twice in Windows — once as a Headset (for calls, lower quality) and once as Headphones (for music, higher quality). Make sure you have selected the Headphones entry as your output, not the Headset entry, for the best audio quality.
Update the Bluetooth Driver
Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, and choose Update driver. Restart the PC and try pairing again.
Run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. It often catches service issues that are not obvious.

Frequently asked questions
My headphones connect but I hear no sound even though they are set as default. What is wrong?
Check that the volume in the Windows Volume Mixer is not muted specifically for the Bluetooth device. Right-click the speaker icon and open Volume Mixer — confirm the Bluetooth headphone channel has volume. Also check the headphones themselves have not been muted via a button on the ear cup.
My PC does not have built-in Bluetooth. Can I add it?
Yes. A USB Bluetooth adapter (sometimes called a Bluetooth dongle) plugs into any USB port and adds Bluetooth support. They cost very little and work with Windows without extra software in most cases. For a desktop with a free PCIe slot, a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo card is a neater permanent solution.
